“Books I finished and games that stayed on the table.”

About me

Illustrated portrait of Ross McKinley

I got two years into a PhD in English before my advisor left for another university and the program more or less stopped returning my emails. I didn't reapply anywhere else. A bookstore on Westminster Street needed someone who could tell a first edition from a book club reprint, and twelve years later I'm still there, cataloging estates and donation boxes and the occasional real find. Tuesdays are for games, at my place or Dana's, going on nine years with mostly the same three or four people.

I catalog and appraise stock for a used and rare bookstore on the west side of Providence, which is a polite way of saying I spend my days deciding what a stranger's old paperbacks are worth. I don't take review copies and I don't run ads. If it's on this site, I bought it, read or played it start to finish, and had something to say once it was done, which is why the posting schedule here is not really a schedule at all.

Where I am: Providence, Rhode Island

Started keeping a reading log the year I left the program, mostly so the years wouldn't blur together. It turned into this.

What's here

Book reviews, board game reviews, and personal essays. No schedule, no affiliate links, nothing sponsored. I write about a book or a game after I've actually finished it and have something to say, which is why the dates on here are irregular.
